There are cakes you eat, and cakes you never forget. This one belongs to the second kind: a full balloon sculpture, from the white and powder-pink icing right down to the spiral candle, delivered recently to Antibes by our workshop.
This creation captures exactly what we mean by Balloon Art at Idéafête: turning a simple decoration order into a genuine piece of ephemeral sculpture, designed and hand-assembled balloon by balloon.
The brief: a life-size showpiece
The brief came down to two numbers that changed everything: 80 cm in circumference by 1 metre tall. At this scale, a balloon cake stops being a simple table decoration and becomes a centrepiece in its own right, standing up to comparison with an actual tiered cake.
The palette plays on a soft gradient: white, powder pink and fuchsia, with touches of purple at the base. Two elements sign the piece and call for real skill in balloon sculpting:
- The sculpted candle: a long twist of pink balloons, hand-shaped to mimic a wax candle, topped with a yellow flame.
- The XXL bow: a ribbon tied entirely from balloons, applied to the front of the "cake" as the finishing touch on a gift wrap.
The whole piece was shaped in an organic style: a mix of balloon sizes that adds texture and breaks up the regularity of a classic gradient, for a livelier result.
Our team's tip: why balloon size changes everything
A successful balloon cake doesn't rely on a single balloon size, but on a carefully judged mix of diameters: small bubbles to fill the gaps, medium balloons for the main mass, and a few large spheres to break up the regularity and give that "organic" look we look for in Balloon Art. It's this contrast in volumes, more than the colour itself, that gives a piece that soft, generous, almost edible feel.
Our team inflates and assembles every structure by hand on an internal frame, with no visible glue or tape, for a clean 360° finish from every angle.
